From today, Monday, October 21, 2025, drivers in Athens can issue the new digital “Ring Permit” (“Daktilios Pass”) for the 2025–2026 period through the Gov.gr platform.
The process is simple, fully online, and necessary for anyone driving in the city center, as the Athens Traffic Ring comes back into effect at the end of October.
Electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles: the big winners of the Ring
One of the most important elements of the new regulation is the complete exemption of electric vehicles from the Ring’s restrictions.
Specifically, fully electric, plug-in hybrid vehicles, as well as those running on natural gas or LPG that meet modern emissions standards, do not require a special permit and can move freely in central Athens every day.
This means that electric car drivers:
• Avoid the “odd–even” restrictions
• Do not need a special license or annual renewal
• Can drive freely within the Ring all year round
• Actively contribute to reducing pollution and noise in the city center
This exemption is not only a practical advantage but also a sign of the government’s commitment to promoting electromobility in Greece. The more drivers switch to electric vehicles, the cleaner and more sustainable the city becomes.
What is the Ring Permit
It is a special electronic authorization that allows a vehicle to circulate within the Traffic Ring on days when, according to the “odd–even” system, it would otherwise be prohibited.
The permit is fully digital — there is no need to print or display it on the windshield, as checks are carried out electronically.
When the Ring returns
The Athens Traffic Ring will come into force at the end of October 2025 and will operate:
• Monday to Thursday: 07:00 – 20:00
• Friday: 07:00 – 15:00
Weekends and public holidays are excluded.
How to issue the new permit
The process is completed exclusively via Gov.gr:
- Visit gov.gr
- Search for “Ring Permit” (Σήμα Δακτυλίου)
- Log in using your Taxisnet credentials
- The system automatically recognizes your vehicle
- If eligible, you can issue the digital permit immediately
The permit is stored electronically in your personal profile.
Who needs a permit
All conventional vehicles that do not fall under the exemptions — such as petrol and diesel cars — must obtain the new permit to drive legally within the Ring.
Important notes
- The old permit is no longer valid. A new application is required.
• Violating the Ring restrictions without a valid permit results in a €100 fine.
• If you change your vehicle or residence, you must reissue your permit.
• The process is completely free of charge.
The role of electromobility in a sustainable city
Electromobility is no longer “the future” — it is the present of sustainable transport.
The exemption of electric vehicles from the Ring restrictions provides yet another incentive for those considering switching to clean mobility, reducing both operational costs and daily inconvenience.
With the ongoing expansion of the national charging network, electric driving is becoming increasingly practical, accessible, and essential for a greener Athens.
